Thirunaal is an action film that stars Jiiva and Nayanthara in the lead roles under the direction of P.S.Ramnath of Ambasamudram Ambani fame.

Hero Jiiva, an orphan, works under gangster Sharath Lohitashwa, who keeps the townships of Thanjavur and Kumbakonam under his control. Heroine Nayanthara's father, Joe Malloori, is a business partner with Sharath. Amidst this situation, Nayanthara often gets a dream of Jiiva marrying her. So, whenever she happens to meet Jiiva, she feels afraid and leaves the place.

One day, a rowdy gang kidnap Nayanthara when she visits her neighbor Yogi Devaraj, who fails to repay a debt. During that incident, Jiiva fights with the gang single-handedly and saves Nayan. When he expresses his love towards her after the fight, Nayan accepts it and both of them start enjoying their days. Not being aware of this relationship, Joe Malloori fixes a bridegroom to Nayan and makes the arrangements for their engagement. The function comes to a halt when the love affair gets revealed.

Depressed about the happenings, Joe Malloori decides to return to his home town and asks Sharath to settle down his share. When Sharath cheats Malloori, Jiiva threatens to turn a witness against Sharath and makes him settle the amount to Malloori.

On the other hand, police officer Gopinath is in search of witnesses to shoot Sharath in an encounter. Fearing that Jiiva would help the police, Sharath decides to kill him. What happens after that and whether Jiiva succeeds in his love is narrated in the second half of the movie.

Actor Jiiva, looking handsome in this film, has played the role of a local thug named Blade. The action scenes that are taken with Jiiva keeping a blade in his mouth and spits it into pieces on his enemies have come out perfect. On the whole, he has registered a good performance not only in action sequences but also in romance and sentiment scenes.

Nayanthara, who has taken up a village girl character after a long gap, makes her fans happy with her innocent and homely looks. Picturing a rural get up, the tattoos on her back could have been concealed.

Lohitashwa looks terrific in his evil attitude. Joe Malloori registers himself as a responsible father. TV popular Gopinath, who makes his presence in few shots, is not able to make any impression as a police officer. The comedies of Muniskanth and Karunas are enjoyable.

P.S.Ramnath has taken a story that has a equal mixture of action and romance. Although the story knot falls decades back, choice of the lead cast patches it up with the present.

The music melodies from Srikanth Deva makes the audience enjoy the songs. Even the background music is effective and gives a hope for his good fortunes. Mahesh Muthusamy's cinematography is an added support to the movie.

Totally, Thirunaal is a celebration.
