'Vil Ambu' is a multi-layered story that primarily focuses on how every human being's life is interlinked to each other. These interconnected stories unfold with the tale of two youngsters - Sri, who does minor robberies, and a well-educated aspiring photographer Harish Kalyan. Their lives frequently run into each others, with various outcomes. The entire movie revolves around characters that pop in and out of the duo's lives, and how it affects them. This includes the parallel tales of two robbers, a group of politicians who have their own agendas, a one-sided love tale of a slum girl and a bitter father-son relationship.
Though Vil Ambu is a movie that encompasses more than one story, the director does make sure to connect the dots. For the cleverly written screenplay and neat execution, Ramesh Subramaniam deserves praise. Despite having too many characters in the film, the director has given good space for each actor to shine well.
Of the actors, the incredibly played character is that of Sri, whose dialogues and body language are highly realistic. Samskruthy Shenoy who appears as his love interest does a good job as a 12th standard student. At the same time, Harish Kalyan has given his part the much-needed personality of an obedient son. Srushti Dange appears as his lady love and has done her part well. With that said, the duo's stereotypical love story fails to impress.
The film contains few funny bits performed by Yogi Babu, who appears as Sri's friend. Though Chandini has lesser screen time, she has done her part well. Harish Uthaman scores high as a local ganja smuggler and a robber. So does Ramachandran Durairaj who appears as his partner in crime. Also, the performances of the supporting cast go a long way towards making the film an intriguing watch.
Music and background score by Navin have helped in underlining the mood of the film. Cinematography by Martin Joe adds so much to the movie while Ruben's editing works well. If there is a minus, it could be the lagging portions of Harish Kalyan in the second half.
On the whole, 'Vil Ambu' is a film close to reality with surprising links and twists.
