Deadpool is the 8th installment in the X-Men series and showcases a simple tale of revenge and reconciliation with one's long-lost love. Ryan Reynolds plays Wade Wilson, a small-time mercenary with a history as a Special Forces operative. He falls in love with Vanessa and just when they seem to be on a pleasant journey together, fate lands a cruel blow as Wade is diagnosed with terminal cancer. With all seemingly lost, Wade agrees to partake in a mutation experiment in the hope of getting cured. Though the process gets rid of the cancer in his system, it leaves him heavily disfigured. He finds out that Francis and Angel Dust are the ones behind this experiment, which is looking for recruits to the Weapon X program. Wade stays away from his girlfriend fearing rejection, and guns for revenge on Francis.
The film works due to the humor involved and the parody on Hollywood pop culture elements. Ryan Reynolds brings his charm to the table, and even when he is hiding under that spandex costume, his voice and breezy lines do the trick. There isn't much in the plot, but the film races to the finish line in under 2 hours. Right from the wacky title credits, the teams leaves us smiling. The action sequences are slick as expected, with fantasy and over-the-top elements dominating. But when the execution is good, even far-fetched moves offer guilty viewing pleasure.
Morena Baccarin plays the hot girlfriend and she has the body to make men swoon in delight. Her role is the typical damsel in distress, beyond a point. The villains are one-dimensional, with the busty, muscular Gina Carrano grabbing some eyeballs. The presence of a couple of X-Men and some other familiar elements thrills loyal fans of the franchise. TJ Miller plays Wade's buddy and it is a predictable part providing some humor.
