Cinema stuntman Rajkiran is living with his son Prasanna, daughter-in-law Chaya Singh and his grandchildren. Despite his old age, he is fearless in questioning those who do wrong in his locality. As a result, the police often come to his house and this irks Prasanna. Realizing that his actions are causing a disharmony within the family, Rajkiran decides to leave the home and goes on a long bike ride.
As he is traveling, he comes across few others in his own age group and reveals to them about his first love. When he tells them that he doesn't know where she is, they explain to him about Facebook and help him find her. He soon comes to know she is living in Hyderabad and sets off to get to her. In the meantime, Prasanna is distraught over his father's disappearance and tries to locate him. Whether Rajkiran gets back together with his long lost lover and Prasanna manages to find where his father is forms the rest of the plot of Power Paandi.
Rajkiran as Paandi powers his way with his powerful performance and fits the bill of a loving grandfather and father throughout the film. He charms us in the first half as a patient individual to his grandchildren and son and, elevates himself with youthful exuberance in the second half of the film. His dialogues are powerful and his interaction with Revathi especially leaves a smile on her face as well as ours. Nobody could have pulled off such an exceptional performance as Rajkiran has in the role of Power Paandi. One can say Dhanush sealed half of the film's success the moment he signed the veteran actor for the lead role. Revathi, who is making a comeback to Tamil cinema after a short hiatus comes only in second half. Although she is featured for a short duration, her portions are thoroughly enjoyable. Dhanush, who comes in as the young Rajkiran and Madonna Sebastian as the young Revathi leave a mark on our hearts with their romance.
Prasanna as Rajkiran's son has delivered a unique performance in the film. He has trumped on all fronts be it as a son who is anxious for his father's return and when he narrates Rajkiran's great achievements to Chaya Singh - it is in these moments and many others that he strikes big and opens the flood gates in our eyes. Chaya Singh makes a comeback after a while and has done a neat job as a dutiful wife and daughter-in-law. The kids in the film, Master Raghavan and Baby Chavi Sharma, although it is their first time in front of the camera, there is not a hint of a nervousness and pull off their roles casually.
Pa Paandi primarily brings up three big questions with its story - how children look after their parents who are retired; what the mindset of those parents is after they have retired and, do the retired parents get any independence when they are dependent on their children. Dhanush has addressed these issues skillfully in his directorial debut. He makes the audience understand that parents too have their lives of their own and need some independence to go about their lives ahead. One thing is for sure though - Power Paandi is without a shadow of a doubt a big lesson for the youngsters today. Dhanush has managed to appeal to both youngsters as well as the elders with his film.
Sean Roldan's musical score is one of the biggest strengths for the film. While the melodious 'Venpani Malarae' is a relief to our ears, the 'Parthen' song also will be an addition to the list of beautiful romantic ballads composed. His background score is top-notch and elevates the film to a whole new level.
In short, Pa Paandi is outright powerful.
