Lingaa music review: AR Rahman dishes out a musical treat for all Rajinikanth fans!

Lingaa is a special film for Rajinikanth in many ways. Not only is the film releasing on his birthday, ie December 12, but also the film marks the proper comeback of Rajini into cinema as Kochadaiyaan featured Thalaiva in animated avatar. Lingaadirected by KS Ravikumar, also marks the debut of Dabangg hottie Sonakshi Sinha into Tamil cinema.
While teaser and trailer of Lingaa have become a huge hit amongst the masses, the music by AR Rahman has also been well received by the fans. This year the Mozart of Madras has already delivered two heart winning albums with I and Kaaviya Thalaivan. Can the musical maestro strike gold for the third consecutive time with Rajini’s Lingaa? Lets dive into ARR’s tunes and see what’s in store for us Rahamaniacs.
Oh Nanba
The album kicks off with the quintessential Rajinikanth introductory song filled with meaningful, message oriented lyrics by Vairamuthu. The song opens up with AR Rahman’s grand orchestration, quickly followed by energetic vocals of evergreen singer SP Balasubramaniam leading into an interlude of techno beats and trumpets. SPB has crooned the song with such gusto that it is hard not to feel overwhelmed by the song. Rahman shows off his musical prowess by mixing minute yet distinct sounds to create a foot tapping number.
En Mannavaa
With En Mannavaa, now we enter AR Rahman’s favourite territory – romantic numbers. Sung melodiously by Aditi Paul and Srinivas, En Mannavaa boasts some amazing lyrics by veteran lyricists Vairamuthu. The song starts off with AR Rahman’s masterful orchestration quickly followed by sweet vocals of Aditi Paul, as the romantic number enters into the arena on Indian percussion instruments as tabla, dhol dominate the song. The song has a classical touch to it and it’s very hum-able tune sticks with you long after the song is over. En Mannavaa is the newest addition into AR Rahman’s list of great romantic tracks.
Indiane Vaa
Mozart of Madras comes up with an uplifting inspirational number with Indiane Vaa. The song clearly depicts Rahman’s love for symphonies, as he beautifully synchronises various instruments to create a motivational song. With melodious chorus and constant drum beats to his aide, ARR croons the song in his unique voice filling the meaningful lyrics of Vairamuthu with so much energy and emotion that it’s hard to take the song out of your mind. The song also boasts some uplifting guitar riffs which are easy to the ears and give the song a happy feel to it. Rahman’s high pitched singing and desi folk beats towards the end will give you goosebumps. After hearing this song, I can surely say that no other singer but ARR could have done justice to it.
Mona Gasolina
Get ready to be pleasantly surprised, grining from ear to ear, as AR Rahman gives one of the most wackiest songs in recent times with Mona Gasolina. After some what odd start to the song, the song ups the ante with some mind blowing orchestral arrangements coupled with crazy indecipherable hoarse singing. Mona Gasolina is a fun quirky number penned by Karky, which shows Rahman’s mastery in the unique fusion of classical style music with western beats. Sung by the trio of Neeti Mohan, Tanvi Shah and Mano, the song is hands down the most enjoyable song of the album. Listen to Mona Gasolina and get mesmerised by varied styles of singing which the singers employ. This experimental number by ARR has surely hit the bull’s eye.
Unmai Orunaal Vellum
The song starts with trademark orchestration of ARR paving way for slow desi beats in this sad number. Sung by super talented Haricharan, the music by Rahman alternates between orchestral symphony and mild drum beats giving life to the soulful lyrics of Vairamuthu. The song also has heart wrenching violin piece. Though the song is a beautiful melancholy, the sad number will not be the most popular song of the film and would appeal to only select class of listeners.
Verdict: If you thought AR Rahman always saves his best for Rajinikanth, then you are probably right. After Sivaji, Enthiran, Kochadaiiyaan, the Oscar winning composer has delivered yet another mouth watering album for Rajinikanth’s Lingaa, for the music lovers to gorge in.
